Working Along Side Your
Landscaper
Do Your Research
Before hiring a landscaper to work with, do your research.
If you hire a landscaper whose work you do not respect or even
admire, you will have a bad relationship from the get-go. Your
landscapers should come highly recommended. Also, take the time
to visit the properties they've worked on. The more you feel
comfortable with their style and design, the better you will
feel about working with them.
Make a Plan
As a do-it-yourselfer, you most likely already have a
fantastic idea in mind about how you want your landscaping to
look. Draw out your plan as best you can. Hiring landscapers to
assist you with bringing your plan to life does not mean you
are no longer involved. In fact, the landscaper's job is to
help you follow through on your plan.
Have a clear idea of your expectations. Then, sit down with
the landscapers and discuss your plan. If you do not feel
confident that they understand your goals and are working
in the same direction you are, then you return to your list of
landscapers and start looking for someone new.
Respect the Landscaper's
Knowledge
For the do-it-yourselfer, this is perhaps the most difficult
rule to follow. Do-it-yourselfers take a great deal of pride in
the fact that they did something to their landscape on their
own. They also are proud of the fact that they have gained a
great deal of knowledge through their own experience and study
regarding landscaping. This pride is well deserved.
Still, you need to also respect the fact that landscapers
are experienced in this line of work. As a result, they are
probably more knowledgeable than you when it comes to
landscaping.
Do not quickly dismiss your landscaper's suggestions. While
you may already have a clear idea of how you want to complete
your landscaping, the landscaper may have a less expensive or
just plain better way to do it. Their years of experience in
many environments give them a breadth of understanding not
often achieved outside the profession.
Check it Out
When your landscaper makes a suggestion to you, it is
perfectly acceptable for you to take a day or two to think
about it, to mull it over. Just because you listen to their
input does not mean you have to follow it. You can check into
the suggestion. Go to a local nursery and bounce the idea off
one of their experienced employees. Professional landscapers
know how long you'll have to live with the decisions you are
making. They will be more than happy to give you some time to
think over your plan.
Take this step of the process seriously. Although
landscapers are accustomed to having to change plans partway
through a project due to unforeseen obstacles, you want to
avoid causing this to happen. Changing the plans part way
through the process can waste time and money. In fact, you can
expect changes you make to increase the bottom line of the
bill. As a do-it-yourselfer, you know how important it is to
conserve both of these resources.
